IOM Future of Nursing Report and Nursing

Introduction

The nursing profession in like other professions is undergoing changes to keep with the expectations of patients. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) established the need for continuous improvements in the nursing profession and made the relevant recommendations. Thispaper explains the work of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation(RWJF) committee initiative on the Future of Nursing and the Institute of Medicine research that resulted into the IOM report, "Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health, and the role of the state based coalitions. The paper also identifies the significance of the IOM "Future of Nursing" report connected to nursing practice, nursing education and nursing workforce development. In addition, the paper describes the role of the state-based action coalitions and how they help in advancing goals of the Future of Nursing IOM report. The Work of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Committee Initiative on the Future of Nursing and the Institute of Medicine Research that Led to the IOM Report, "Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation committee initiative on the Future of Nursing (RWJF) collaborated with the Institute of Medicine Research (IOM) to develop vital insights that contributed to the development of the IOM report. Previously, the RWJF established the key roles nurses undertake in providing care to patients and implementing reforms (National Academy for Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, 2010). Concurrently, the RWJF also recognized that the profession of nursing was facing certain problems that were considered barriers to the effective provisions of nursing care to patients.
